As another birthday comes and passes, it’s nice to reflect, assess and begin another great year.
To be fair, I often now have to think of what age I am. I’m feeling the healthiest I’ve felt in forever and in a good place.
As I sit back and reflect on the years and still being a young professional, I want to turn back the clock six years this weekend.
I was a personal trainer and fitness manager at the Y. I was learning every day, trying to get better but really I had no idea what I was doing. I was just sorta learning on the fly by trial and error.
One thing holding me back was a fixed mindset. I was learning and growing a little but really I had some negative qualities, didn’t believe I could grow or do anything BIG, and was my own worst enemy - all qualities of a fixed mindset. I just wasn’t where I wanted to be.
That weekend, I signed up for the TRX Summit in Baltimore and decided to invest in myself. I liked TRX, my clients did and believed it was a good step.
When I went there, I expected to learn some more TRX exercises and formats I could bring back to my clients.
What I left there with was a new vision, a belief in myself, and the start of something amazing.
Todd Durkin was the keynote speaker and LIT the room on fire. You wanted to run through a wall for him. At the end of it, he plugged his Mastermind group.
I thought to myself, “I need to look into that and see what it’s all about.”
I didn’t have a vision of opening my gym yet but knew I needed something to level up.
I joined the Institute Level in 2016 and started listening to the calls, doing the professional and personal development exercises the group recommended, and seeing the questions others were asking and the resources and experiences they were sharing.
This was my type of group. It gave me the ability to bounce ideas off of people, and grow as a person and fitness pro AND it gave me the belief that I could start my own gym.
Flash forward two years later and I decided to go to the Mastermind Annual Retreat. I was developing my systems, honing my craft, and taking it step-by-step. I didn’t have a date that I would go out on my own though.
While we were waiting for the morning workout in the lobby, I talked to two Mastermind members, Andrew Simpson and Ryan Morse, and we were chatting about business stuff and they asked, “What’s holding you back? Just do it and make it happen.” Pretty blunt but from that point on I set a date that I would go out on my own.
Without that little push, who knows how long it would’ve taken.
Four years later, I’ve been to multiple retreats and created lifelong relationships.
I’ve started and grown my business - even through COVID, I’ve grown as a person and professional and found my tribe of people that make me better every day.
If I had gone at it alone, I’d probably be at square one.
If you want to take the next step, you need to surround yourself with people that lift you up and that’s what the Todd Durkin Mastermind Group does.
No matter what business you are in, level up, surround yourself with people that bring out the best in you, AND people that you can call up and chat and ask questions.
As I reflect back on another year, it’s been another great year and I’m so grateful that I attended the TRX Summit back in 2016.
Here’s to another great year head!
P.S. If you are a fitness pro and want to join the Todd Durkin Mastermind Group, let me know and I can get you in contact with my coach!
