The State of the Union
I feel the State of the Union addresses are generally at the beginning of the year but as we start this second half of 2020, there is no better time to deliver one than right now.
2020 went something like this for most of us. It was humming along pretty well and then an asteroid hit. Asteroids hit the earth about once every 500,000 years so maybe that’s a bit of a stretch but the world as we knew it came to a screeching halt.
For the past four months or so, things have changed. Businesses have adapted, some have shut down, face masks are required in public and a lot of people have been affected by this virus known as COVID-19. Facebook seems to be a battle of political sides and there is bickering non-stop. The news stations are on at most houses 24/7, delivering a grim outlook and eye-opening figures.
To put it short, things certainly have not gone as planned so far in 2020, BUT that’s about to change.
We are the greatest nation in the world and at Adam Clark Fitness, we have core values that we live by. I declare that we all follow those values and make the most of 2020.
I declare that we will bring our “A” game no matter what. There are days when we are feeling down, not feeling our best, and want to mail it in but bringing one’s “A” game is doing the best with what you have on that very day. Oftentimes, it means just doing something. With exercise, do something and whether you’re doing it for 10 minutes or 60 minutes, give it your all. At work do you find yourself clock watching? Make the most of your time so when you missed out on that sale, you can’t live with regret.
I declare we will set the example for others and be a role model in life. Being a role model is more than just showing it when you’re in public. Today, with social media, your role extends far beyond when you’re in the public eye. Be a role model for your kids if you have them. Be a role model for your friends. Be a role model for your co-workers. No matter what area of life, if you’re doing your best and going the extra mile, you will have no regrets.
I declare we will squash the negative energy and spread positivity. This should probably be number one right now as there is so much divisiveness, arguing, and hatred in the world. If you have social media you know exactly what I’m talking about. A good start to squashing this is limiting your news intake. By constantly obsessing over depressing numbers of infections, deaths, and unrest in the world, what does that do for you? It scares you, it allows fear to creep in, it paralyzes you and it turns into a cycle that’s hard to break free of. Instead of sharing every single article that enforces your political opinion and arguing with strangers on the internet, feed your mind with positivity and be the light. If you need help with this one, you let me know and I can send you in the right direction!
I declare there is no “I” in team and we will work in collaboration with others for the greater good. It’s good to be independent. You should be able to function on your own but you also need to work as a team. We have many teams in our lives. Work teams, family teams, sports teams, friend teams, and the list goes on. Ever been part of a dysfunctional team? Sure you have and it mostly stems from a few people not adapting and trying to go about things there very own way. Well, we live in a time where you need to adapt. You need to adapt and work as a team whether it be at work or at home because without teamwork, you are affecting more than just yourself.
I declare we will live by the mantra, “Get 1% Better Every Day.” If everyone lived by this mantra, we’d be a better place. Nothing happens overnight in terms of long-term results. It never has and never will. It requires consistent positive actions daily and that’s what “Get 1% Better Every Day” is all about. It’s about bringing your “A” game, setting the example, spreading positivity, and working as a team. This mindset is long term. We can do this. You can do this and it requires working on yourself daily.
COVID-19 isn’t going away anytime soon but we must live with it, protect ourselves both physically and mentally and live the best we can with what we got! Remember this line by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”
Are you ready to start living? What is the one declaration that most resonates with you?
